Haptic Effects of Surgical Teleoperator Flexibility
نویسندگان
چکیده
Minimally invasive surgery systems typically involve thin and cabledriven surgical instruments. This introduces link and joint flexibility in the slave robot of a master-slave teleoperation system, reducing the effective stiffness of the slave and the transparency of teleoperation. In this paper, we analyze transparency under slave link and joint flexibility (tool flexibility). We also evaluate the added benefits of using extra sensors at the tip of the flexible robot. It is shown that tip velocity (or position) feedback improves free-space position tracking performance in the presence of robot flexibility. Also, when the interaction forces with an environment are measured by a force sensor and fed back to the user’s hand, tip velocity feedback improves hard-contact force tracking performance. During a hard contact task, tip velocity feedback can also eliminate the transmission of robot flexibility to the user’s hand.

On the Display of Haptic Recordings for Cutting Biological Tissues
Current simulations of surgical procedures do not provide haptic feedback of cutting forces felt while using surgical scissors. We have designed and tested haptic scissors, an interface that can display forces to a user grasping Metzenbaum scissor handles. By filtering and scaling cutting data obtained in previous work, we have created haptic virtual environments that can simulate the cutting...
متن کاملHaptic Telemanipulation in Extensive Remote Environments
We present a telepresence system with visual and haptic feedback for a telemanipulation task in full six degrees-of-freedom. The employed teleoperator consists of an anthropomorphic manipulator arm mounted on a mobile base to allow task execution in wide remote environments. On the operator side we use a hyperredundant force-reflecting input device. Control issues of operator and teleoperator a...
متن کاملA novel haptic interface for free locomotion in extended range telepresence scenarios
Telepresence gives a user the impression of actually being present in a distant environment. A mobile teleoperator acts as a proxy in this target environment, replicates the user’s motion, and records sensory information, which is transferred to the user and displayed in real-time. As a result the user is immersed in the target environment. The user can then control the teleoperator by walking ...
متن کاملMaximizing the Sensation of Compliance in Teleoperative Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) can be of great bene t to the patient, but places great demands on the surgeon's perceptual motor skills. Teleoperation technology can restore some of the lost dexterity and sensation in MIS. In this paper, we describe (a) experiments to determine human capability to discriminate changes in compliance displayed through a haptic interface and (b) analysis of tele...
متن کاملSensing and Displaying Spatially Distributed Fingertip Forces in Haptic Interfaces for Teleoperator and Virtual Environment Systems
This article reports a variety of sensory and perceptual consequences of eliminating, via a rigid fingertip sheath, the spatially distributed fingertip force information that is normally available during tactile and haptic sensing. Sensory measures included tactile spatial acuity, tactile force, and vibrotactile thresholds. Suprathreshold tasks included perception of roughness, perception of 2-...
